Too little, too late
The world might have rejoiced the last two days at the Democrats' victory in the United States, but as far as I am concerned, it was bound to happen. If it had not happened, I would have lost all respect for the collective intelligence of America. The fact that this has not happened till now, is in itself a miracle, and a testament to my generous nature.
This is not a moment to rejoice however. The astute will understand that the damage has been done. Just because there are a few changes in administrative policies, and staff members will not change the global reality, being that the world is more alientaed from America today than ever before, and that the world is at greater odds today with its overlord than ever before.
The Bush administration has unequivocally been the single most disastrous administration in recent memory, and that includes the likes of the Taliban and Saddam-led Iraq. The reality above ground might have changed but at its core, nothing has changed, and indeed cannot chang any time soon: American soldiers are still in Iraq- a country in the depths of crisis, Canadian and British soldiers are in Afghanistan, a country whose state only seems better to us because it is not as intensively covered in world media- nevertheless, it too is in a deep crisis with the Afghani forces in complete disarray. Nothing has changed. Rumsfeld is just a name, with an attitude behind it. The ex-chief of the CIA during the reign of Bush Snr. will not be much better, he might might be less brash and dismissive perhaps, but I assure you the policies will change just on the surface. John Bolton, another name with an attitude will be replaced by someone more complacent, but all the above points apply to him too.
Unless America can conjure up another war on another front, and unless this war goes extremely well, I think it is fair to say that the Democrats will win the next election in a convincing manner. What happens from there on is a mater of circumstance and luck.
At this point, I will be remiss not to mention how I feel about this small incident as part of a much larger sequence of events. I shall spare you the details, suffice to say...
A hegemon is dying my friends; it is dying a death reserved for the gluttonous, the self-obsessed, the unforgiving, the traitorous, and the opportunist. It will fight tooth and nail against its own demise, but its final breath is inevitable. When it shall come, we will only know when the moment arrives. But for now, I am willing to predict that the struggle will be long and costly to all that are involved. The Bush administration's loss of power should thus be looked upon as nothing more than a frantic grasp for air by a giant who is close, in relative terms, to the mighty fall reserved only for those that flew too close to the sun.
