Paradise Now

Rough Quote: Said says, "They've already made the world believe that they are the victims. Is it possible for someone to be both the oppressor and the victim. If it is, then there is only one choice for me, to be victim and killer... I want to deliver this message to them, and I can only think of this way to do it."

Paradise Now is a foreign language film that was recently nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar; it did not win, but it has attracted wide acclaim and for good reason. There are a lot of issues that surround this controversial film. I want to put these secondary issues aside and speak about the movie itself. Or else, this will turn into a political rant.

One word describes this movie very well... powerful. For the first time in my life, I have come across a film that deals with such an explosive issue as Israel/Palestine and suicide bombings. The movie provides gripping dialogue which shows above all, the humanity of the situation suicide bombers are placed in. This movie speaks volumes on many different levels.

The direction is as close to perfect as you can get. The juxtaposition of ideas, lifestyles and people's perspectives on life in the Occupied Lands is enthralling. The two main actors pull off stunning performances and the supporting cast is amazing. This movie is must see material.

I can't say much more, I just don't have words to describe the brilliance with which this movie gripped me.Stunning. I have not seen Tsotsi yet, but I find it hard to believe that Tsotsi was better than this movie. I think the Academy caved under pressure and awarded the Oscar this year, to a safer pick; because of there was any justice in the world, the Oscar would have gone to paradise Now.

Watch this movie. It'll leave you speechless.
