Karachi- everything from Richard Pryor to Sugarcane Juice
first off, Richard Pryor. I was not around when this man did his best work, I was not even thinking about being born yert infact. Neither can I presume that I have seen his best work which was mostly done in seedy comedy blubs of new York and Chicago- but, man am I ever a fan of this trailblazer that changed the face of comedy forever and sadly passed away yesterday.
Respect, Richard Pryor. Respect.
I've been sick for the last few days in Karachi, it kinda of sucks but its part and parcel of being here after nine years. I'm recovering slowly although it'll still be a while before I can fully hear from my left ear. I've been trying to induce it out of its stupor with doses of Chemical Brothers but its not working. Perhaps Method Man will do the trick. But then I run the risk of swearing at any and everything on these tsreets and let's be frank there is much to swerar at- from the traffic to the young kids intent on dying under your car.
I went to Karachi's International Book Fair yesterday. It was quite good I must say, I picked up a few books including the Da Vinci Code which I am now currently reading and as of the ninth chapter, absolutely loving. I also picked up another book that is based in Karachi and I did start reading that a few days ago and found myself enjoying that a lot too, Kartography by Kamila Shamsie.
I go to my nani's house today, thats my grandmother from my mother's side. It should be good. A young boy of 13 is being sent on rickshaw to pick me up. Needless to say, I am more than just a little ashamed. But you don't argue with grandpeople they say, well, no matter. I shall not argue, but I shall show my distatste for the setup by getting him his own rickshaw and then getting my own and having them follolw each other all the way home-0 much to the chgrin of all that shall see me waste a hundred rupees for no reason. That perhaps shall be teh strongest argument of all... OR I could just take my cousin out for some sugarcane juice, I shalll decide when he arrives.
