Samurai Fiction - a review

Samurai Fiction: Episode One
I came across this movie a few months ago and it looked interesting. As much as I was looking forward to watching it, when it actually started, I realised that I was in for a different kind of Samurai movie.
The story is pretty simple. A valuable artifact gets stolen, it has to be brought back because a family's honour is at stake. A young man follows the thief and tries to fight the thief for the sword. Its your basic knowledge through a quest script. But, that is where the similarities to other samurai movies ends.
This movie is light hearted and has some incredibly funny scenes. This is just your well publicised hollywood movie that also happens to have great samurai scenes. The scenes between friends and family are frank and simple. The sadness portrayed in some scenes is so beautiful when u realise that you were just laughing out loud a second ago.
This makes the movie much less rigid and formal. Its hard to explain because this has never been done in this genre before. And if it has, it has not been as well as this.
funny, sad at times, completely ridiculous in other scenes, a great inventive script, some awesome fight scenes and excellent directing throughout the movie.
Samurai Fiction: 7.8/10
