Screw the Vote..

I watched Jian Gomeshi's "Screw the Vote" show on CBC a few nights ago.

He constantly kept asking why it was that the majority of Canadians were not voting. Moreover, why were young Canadians not voting. It was an interesting show but it failed to really highlight some issues.

The basic reason for people not voting is that the elites within our society have changed people's perception about democracy. Democracy is supposed to be representative. It is supposed to be something that directly reflects the views of the people. However, this does not happen and therefore, people have become disenchanted with voting. Moreover, politicians have not been punished for not representing the views of the public. These two facts combined cause the apathy that exists within eligible voters.

However, what people fail to realise (atleast in large numbers), is that if the working class actually got up one day and voted, they could easily overthrow the elites within our society democratically. Power currently rests in the hands of a few hundred people. I am speaking of both politicians and the people bankrolling them. However, the working class and middle classes are millions strong. If we ever voted in great enough numbers after realising this, our system would shape up in response to us.

When politicians realise that they are not going to get elected if they do not represent their people, they shape up and start looking out for the person with the real power. This power base is the people of Canada.

In essence, elites depend on the disenchantment that we show towards elections. The more we choose to ignore politics and not get involved, the better for them. These people are not doing anything illegal, they are just exploiting our mistakes and lack of knowledge and understanding to their advantage.

The more we ignore politics and the more young canadians do not vote, the worse our country becomes as it panders to the interests of corporations and other nations.

so, please vote.
