I just read a news piece that made me really sad and wonder about the human spirit and whether it exists anymore..
This article is from the Guardian and talks about how the Pope has ben really vehemently opposed to gay marriages and priests etc. But, that is not what surprised and hurt me.. what has really made me sad are the following passages:
"Pope John Paul's health has become a burning topic - journalists have been preparing reams of what Italians call coccodrilli (crocodiles): epic obituaries, nostalgia and analysis written in advance.
'Vaticanists' moved up a gear after one of the Pope's closest aides, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, let slip that the Holy Father was 'in a bad way'. At the Atlante Star Hotel, boasting Rome's best view of the Vatican, cables and ISDN lines are in already place on the terrace, which US network CBS pre-booked in 1999. More than 6,000 journalists are expected in Rome for what could be the first papal death transmitted live."
" 'There is a need for a more normal Pope,' said Messori. 'One who doesn't travel so much, who makes less news and is quieter. You can't live in a constant revolution.' " -- The Guardian
how sad is that? there are actually people waiting to make money off of the death of this pope. Come on people.. where are our morals? what has happened to our world? my god... I don't even know what to say..
CBS has had a space booked in Rome since 1999 ??! .. what is going on with our world? where are our priorities?
This article leaves more questions to be answered than it actually answers.. I guess that is the characteristic of good reporting and media.
needless to say.. I am deeply disturbed by the fact that people have eulogies and obituaries written for this undeniably great man before his death. Internet has been hooked up in hotel rooms to allow for faster transmissions of reports of his death when that happens.. the last thing a person needs while dying is the whole world watching him/her die.
If that isn't enough.. there are people actually predicting that we might have our first 'live on television/radio' papal death. I don't know what to say...
I hope these people realise how low tehy have stooped in order to get one scoop.. I hope they somehow, through devine intervention or otherwise, they realise their folly and let thi sman die in peace rather than making his death a free for all expose' for their corporate profits. I hope.
