ok... wow... i just screwed up royally with the design and then i changed two little things in the code .. i mean i was missing a "/span" at one place and i had one too many at another point .. i fixed those after searching for what was wrong for 45 minutes....and the whole thing looks perfect now... in the words of britt (my friend)..."oivey!"
